“Grendel” star discloses shocking Netflix Termination even after Trending

The actor who plays Grendel, Andy Mientus, has voiced his surprise that Netflix had cancelled the planned comic book adaptation even though the entire series has already been filmed.

“We all know this business can be a heartbreaker, but I thought after more than a decade navigating it, I’d seen all the ways it can break your heart,” he posted on Instagram. “Grendel was a Yes when I needed one badly; my first job post pandemic, in a true dream role that pushed me as an actor to places I’d never gone before. I realized as I was doing it how hungry I’d been for such a push.” The actor continued by explaining how surprising it was for the series to be canceled before a single episode had aired. “Hundreds of talented, tireless, wonderful people shot not just a pilot, not just a few episodes, but an entire season that now might go unseen. I’m used to shows closing or getting canceled, but only after they at least get to meet the world, their fate decided mostly by their audience. What’s happened here is a new one for me, and a shock, and I won’t pretend it doesn’t really sting.”

Grendel, a film based on the same titled Dark Horse comic book series, was announced in August 2021 and released in September 2022. Andrew Dabb have penned and executive produced the first season’s eight episodes.

Abubakr Ali, who portrayed Hunter Rose/Grendel in The Walking Dead: World Beyond, is a talented fencer, writer, and assassin who goes to war with New York’s criminal underworld in order to revenge the loss of a lost love before eventually joining them. Larry Stohler, Grendel’s right-hand man and assistant, would have been portrayed by Mientus.

One of the projects created by Netflix and Dark Horse Entertainment as part of their first-look agreement was Grendel. The series could now be sold to other producers by the Grendel creators.
