Donald Glover and Maya Erskine’s highly anticipated TV show, a reimagining of the 2005 film Mr. & Mrs. Smith, has hit a small setback. Prime Video recently announced that the premiere, initially scheduled for November, has been pushed back to early 2024.
However, to soften the blow, they also shared a thrilling first-look photo of Glover and Erskine as the married assassins. Co-created and executive-produced by Glover and Francesca Sloane (from Fargo), Mr. & Mrs. Smith stars Glover as John Smith and Erskine as Jane Smith.
While the 2005 movie’s premise inspires the series, the new story has some critical differences. The film’s central plot revolves around two married assassins tasked with killing each other after discovering their dual lives as spies for rival agencies. However, the Prime Video series takes a different approach.
John and Jane, who are initially strangers, voluntarily adopt new identities to work together as partners both in espionage and marriage. According to the show’s official logline, each episode chronicles their relationship’s progression and showcases their adventures on various missions. But as the strain on their relationship grows, they must fight to stay together because divorce is strictly off the table.
Last year, Erskine stepped into the female lead role, taking over from Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who exited the project due to creative differences. Despite the change, Glover had nothing but praise for both actresses, stating, “I still like her [Waller-Bridge], I assume she still likes me,” while expressing his excitement for Erskine’s involvement.
