In a bold move, Netflix is considering a staggered release strategy for its highly anticipated reality series, Squid Game: The Challenge. While the series is set to premiere on November 22, the streaming giant is contemplating holding back some episodes for a later release date to generate more buzz around the show.
According to Deadline, Netflix, known for pioneering binge-watching, has experimented with staggered release strategies on other reality shows like Too Hot to Handle and The Circle. For instance, the Korean reality series Physical: 100 released two episodes every Tuesday. This approach, once the domain of traditional broadcast television, is being explored by streamers as a means to create appointment viewing experiences.
A Challenge Indeed
Squid Game: The Challenge is billed as the largest reality series ever produced, featuring 456 contestants vying for a jaw-dropping $4.56 million prize. The show is a collaboration between UK producers Studio Lambert and The Garden and was filmed at Cardington Studios, a former Royal Air Force base.
As the original Squid Game games were brutal, during production, safety measures were rigorously examined after some contestants required medical attention while filming the intense “Red Light, Green Light” game, where players evade a menacing robotic doll. This happened during a particularly cold spell in Britain.
Netflix has already teased viewers with a trailer for Squid Game: The Challenge, building excitement for the upcoming release. While the streaming giant mulls over its release strategy, fans are eagerly awaiting the arrival of this massive reality series.
