Director Mark Mylod says making ‘The Menu’ felt like ‘Walking on Tightrope’

A young couple who goes on a trip to a fancy hotel on an Island finds some exquisite cuisines on The Menu. However, the making was not that fancy confirms Director Mark Mylod.

In a recent interview at Koimoi, the director says he felt immense pressure making the movie as they were constantly trying to balance the movie’s plot with human morals. He says, “We wanted to be really careful about skewering the industry and walked this tightrope, poking at it while remaining deeply respectful of the art form and the humans who are involved.”

He goes on to add that he had to get his own hands dirty trying to get to the surface of the plot and says, “When I got involved, I did my own personal dive into that world to educate myself on how it worked and the level of commitment and the stress of maintaining that extraordinary level of art night after night. It destroys people. It’s incredibly high pressure.”

Screenwriter Will Tracy also joins the chat and says that because she suffers from claustrophobia and was abandoned on an unknown island, the experience was rather distressing for her. Tracy says, “I’m a bit claustrophobic, and as we sat down to eat, I saw the boat that dropped us off leaving the dock. It was a small island. And I realized, Oh, we’re stuck here for four hours. What if something goes wrong?’.”

Producer Adam McKay also jokingly adds, “The film mixes biting class satire with humour, darkness, and a healthy dash of absurdity. Does that sound like a recipe? I swear I didn’t mean to do that.”

The Menu is available to watch on HBO Max.
