Craig Gillespie in Talks to Helm ‘Supergirl’ for DC Studios

Renowned filmmaker Craig Gillespie, known for his work on “Cruella” and “I, Tonya,” is reportedly in negotiations to direct “Supergirl” for Warner Bros. DC Studios.

The project is slated for production in the fourth quarter, following the completion of James Gunn’s “Superman,” which is currently filming in Georgia and set for release on July 11, 2025. DC luminaries Gunn and Peter Safran are set to produce the film, with DC EVP Chantal Nong serving as executive producer.

Milly Alcock, acclaimed for her role in “House of the Dragon,” has been cast as Supergirl. Alcock will first appear in another DC project before making her highly anticipated debut as the Angel of the Sky.

Supergirl” draws inspiration from Tom King’s popular 2022 comic book series, “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” featuring artwork by Bilquis Evely. Ana Nogueira has adapted the comic for the silver screen, reflecting the comic’s popularity by prominently featuring it at major retailers like Barnes and Noble.

James Gunn, speaking at a DC Studios press event, highlighted the character’s unique backstory, emphasizing her resilience after witnessing the destruction of her home planet, Krypton, and enduring unimaginable loss before arriving on Earth as a young girl.

Gillespie’s track record in delivering compelling female-driven narratives is well-established, with “I, Tonya” earning an Oscar win and “Cruella” achieving success both in theaters and on Disney+. His expertise in this genre, coupled with his proven directorial prowess, positions him as an ideal candidate for “Supergirl.”

As negotiations continue, fans eagerly anticipate Gillespie’s potential involvement in bringing this iconic superheroine to life on the big screen.
