Sofia Vergara, best known for her role in the hit TV show Modern Family, is set to make her dramatic debut as Griselda Blanco in Netflix’s limited series Griselda. She portrays the infamous Colombian Godmother who established one of history’s most profitable drug cartels.
The show comes from the creators and executive producers of Narcos and Narcos Mexico, Eric Newman and Doug Miro. Co-showrunner Ingrid Escajeda and director Andrés Baiz join them. Vergara herself is also an executive producer alongside Luis Balaguer through Latin World Entertainment.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Newman described Griselda as a cousin to Narcos, which was a massive success for Netflix. He was particularly drawn to the story due to Vergara’s passionate desire to tell it.
The project had been in development for eight years before landing on Netflix. The logline for the show reads: “Griselda is inspired by the life of the savvy and ambitious Colombian Griselda Blanco, who created one of the most profitable cartels in history. In 1970s-80s Miami, Blanco’s lethal blend of unsuspected savagery and charm helped her expertly navigate between business and family, leading her to become widely known as the Godmother.”
The cast includes Alberto Guerra, Dario Sepúlveda, Christian Tappan, Arturo Mesa, Martín Rodríguez, Rivi Ayala, Juliana Aidén Martinez, June Hawkins, Vanessa Ferlito, and Carmen Gutiérrez, among others. Guest stars include Carolina Giraldo, aka Karol G, Fredy Yate, Paulina Dávila, José Ziga, Camilo Jiménez Varela, Julieth Restrepo, Gabriel Sloyer, Diego Trujillo, and Narcos star Alberto Amann.
The six-episode miniseries will be available on Netflix from January 25, 2024.
