The Great
Tony McNamara, the author of The Favorite, is back with “an occasionally true story” for Hulu that focuses on Catherine the future great’s rise when she was just “a 20-year-old who has been in Russia six months, and who—with the aid of a drunken general, an angry maid, and a nervous bureaucrat is going up against the violent regime that is Peter’s empire”.
The ten-episode series appears like a conventional historical drama but seems refreshingly contemporary in its approach because of its sharp, quick-paced narrative and beautiful costuming.
The series’ acid, winning humor recognizes the cliched ridiculousness of a time marked by the continual opposition of luxury and savagery. It is bathed in a Marie Antoinette meets Death of Stalin aesthetic. Catherine’s outright successes may be few and far between, but the trip is fascinating. Pam & Tommy is a series that manages to harness the absolute insanity of its premise for good thanks to a pair of uncannily accurate bodily modifications and sensitive performances from leads Lily James and Sebastian Stan.

Dopesick
Dopesick, a Barry Levinson and Danny Strong adaptation, is unquestionably not a light watch. The series is packed with awful, damning facts and is colored in shades of blue and grey with a somber narrative tone. Since we already know how this story ends in 2021 and that it is still ongoing, it is painful to witness a good doctor who cares deeply about his patients fall for lies about the drug’s safety.
Because of this, despite its flaws and lulls, I wanted to continue watching. Every revelation is crucial and damaging. The deceit, the greed, the deception, and the horror were all things I wanted to quote.

The short-lived ABC News podcast of the same name, which followed Elizabeth Holmes from her admittance to Stanford University to her corporate bankruptcy, served as the inspiration for the limited series. Elizabeth Holmes creates healthcare technology that puts millions of patients in danger and loses everything in the blink of an eye in a story of ambition and stardom gone horribly wrong.

Life & Beth
The emotional stakes are high in Amy Schumer’s new dramedy series Life & Beth. The program sensitively and honestly examines how Beth’s (Schumer) toughest teenage years are linked to her parents, particularly her mother. Everyone has a different meaning when they return to their old home, but for Beth, it meant discovering that her wounded adolescent self was still very much a part of her. The impressive cast of the show also merits praise.
As Beth’s potential love interest John, Michael Cera is so adorable, and he and Schumer have an odd but unmistakable chemistry. Susannah Flood gives one of the most nuanced performances of the entire series as Beth’s emotionally guarded and humorous sister, Ann. The performance of Michael Rapaport and Laura Benanti as Beth’s damaged but devoted parents is outstanding. Regarding Schumer, she successfully steps outside of her comfort zone in this situation.

Creating a comedy about middle school is two young women. They give the characters eponymous names based on their experiences: Maya (Maya Erskine) and Anna (Anna Konkle). Then they make an incredibly unique casting decision, portraying themselves as the 13-year-old main characters and surrounding themselves with a supporting cast of genuine middle school students. The outcome is so painfully awful that it most likely outperforms actual middle school, which is no minor accomplishment. Erskine and Konkle throw themselves into the parts wholeheartedly, stopping at nothing to dissect seventh grade in all its revolting, euphoric beauty.
They are hilarious, and occasionally you completely forget they are grownups. And then there are times when that truly stands out like a sore thumb, and those times may be the best because they brilliantly and zanily capture the opposing desires of the age—to rush into adulthood and to retreat into the security of childhood. These are young people who cannot comprehend the fact that nothing momentous or defining has yet occurred to them and for whom every single minute appears momentous and defining.

Ramy
In Ramy, a quarter-life crisis has never tasted so good. A fictionalized version of the show’s protagonist Ramy Youssef, who also wrote a large portion of the first season’s episodes, is followed in the half-hour Hulu comedy as he adjusts to life as a young Muslim Egyptian-American in New Jersey. Together with showrunner Bridget Bedard, co-creators Ari Katcher and Ryan Welch find an adorable idiot in Ramy and have a lot to say about generational compromise, religious identity, and cultural collision. Ramy is a fascinating representation of Islam on TV and is simple to watch.
