Poll Highlights: Majority of Americans Back Hollywood Strikes

A recent survey conducted by progressive polling firm Data for Progress reveals strong public support for the ongoing Hollywood strikes led by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA).

The poll, which gathered responses from 1,124 participants between August 3 and 5, found that 67% of likely voters back the strikes, with only 18% opposing them.

Interestingly, the survey also indicated a growing negative sentiment towards major Hollywood studios. Approximately 48% of respondents held an unfavorable view of these studios, while only 31% expressed support. The poll delved further into entertainment preferences, with 60% subscribing to Netflix, 41% to Hulu, and 35% to Disney+.

When questioned about their stance amid potential delays in their favorite films and shows, a substantial 86% of strike supporters stated they would continue to endorse the strikes, compared to 10% who would oppose.

The main reasons cited for the strikes were diverse. Among respondents, 33% highlighted fair compensation for streaming content, another 33% emphasized pay and benefits, and 16% focused on safeguards against artificial intelligence.

Liz Shuler, President of the AFL-CIO, underlined the significance of the poll results and their implication for unions and the workforce at large. Shuler emphasized, “Voters understand that this isn’t just about one industry — this is about all of us — and unions need to have a seat at the table to take on the existential threat AI poses to our livelihoods and economy.”

The ongoing hollywood strikes, which commenced on May 2 and July 14 respectively, center around demands for enhanced residuals for streaming content, regulations on AI implementation, and increased minimum compensation rates in line with inflation.

As these strikes continue, public sentiment and support for the unions remain strong, reflecting a growing awareness of the vital role of unions in addressing contemporary workforce challenges.
