Henry Cavill’s Superman May Soar Again in DC’s Red Son

The DC Universe might be witnessing the return of Henry Cavill as Superman, thanks to James Gunn’s latest venture into the DCU. Gunn’s upcoming film, Superman: Legacy, slated for 2025, promises a fresh take on iconic characters.

While fan-favorite Cavill won’t reprise his role as Superman in this new vision, hope isn’t lost. Director Matthew Vaughn, known for his work with Cavill in Argylle (2024), expressed his desire to bring the actor back for a DC Elseworlds project.

As per sources, Vaughn discussed his interest in adapting the comic Superman: Red Son (2003), where Superman’s origin story takes a unique turn as he lands in the Soviet Union instead of the United States.

In a recent appearance on the Post Credit Podcast, Vaughn expressed his admiration for Red Son and its relevance in today’s world. He said, “I thought Red Son was one of the cleverest comics I’d ever read, and the current world we’re living in, it’s certainly become a lot more relevant because ignorance causes more issues, and I think the more we learn about Russia and the Russian history. Wow, could you imagine remaking Red Son with Henry Cavill? That would be an interesting movie…”

Henry Cavill Superman

Vaughn’s enthusiasm for the project and his vision of Cavill in the lead role garnered attention. Red Son explores an alternate reality where Superman’s allegiance shifts to the Soviet Union, offering a fresh take on the iconic character.

Given Cavill’s previous successful portrayal of Superman, this Elseworlds concept could provide an exciting opportunity for the actor and a unique addition to DC’s cinematic universe.

As DC ventures into Elseworlds storytelling with projects like The Batman – Part II (2025) and Joker: Folie à Deux (2024), the potential return of Henry Cavill in Superman: Red Son adds another intriguing layer to DC’s cinematic landscape. Fans eagerly await further developments and the possibility of witnessing Cavill don the cape once more in this alternate Superman tale.
