Former Superman Henry Cavill to star in a new Highlander movie. Lionsgate is finally unveiling their long-awaited fantasy reboot at AFM, and it’s shaping up to be quite the spectacle.
Leading the charge is Cavill, who will take on the role of the iconic Scottish swordsman, and at the helm is none other than John Wick director Chad Stahelski. This is no small production, with a budget soaring past $100 million. Stahelski has drawn parallels to John Wick, hinting at a high-octane, sword-clashing adventure.
The production team is gearing up for a 2024 launch. The new film draws inspiration from the 1986 original, featuring Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, and Clancy Brown as immortal beings engaged in a relentless pursuit of power.
According to Deadline, the Witcher actor Cavill remains in high demand. Among movies in post are Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle and two Guy Ritchie projects, including WWII pic The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Stahelski has directed all four John Wick films, which have been a goldmine for Lionsgate, taking more than $1BN. He previously talked about the new Highlander as the first in a trilogy but had not commented.
While Cavill and Stahelski’s involvement was known before, the Highlander reboot‘s official announcement is a breath of fresh air for AFM, which has faced challenges due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. It joins Kevin Costner’s Horizon movies as one of the most significant budget prospects presented at the market.
Despite the strike-related limitations, the industry continues to churn out new projects, some of which are on sale, showcasing resilience and determination in the face of adversity. Buyers still have promising pre-sales packages to explore, even as more attention turns toward completed and near-completed films in this unique market landscape.
