David Benioff & D.B. Weiss Dish on HBO Split and Game of Thrones Finale Revelation

Game of Thrones maestros David Benioff and D.B. Weiss spill the beans on their HBO departure and address a lingering rumor about the show’s finale in a candid interview.

The creators, now at Netflix working on the upcoming series 3 Body Problem, reveal insights into their decision to part ways with HBO in a Wall St. Journal’s WSJ Magazine feature. Benioff emphasizes the need for stability in a long-term deal, expressing the desire to focus on creative work without concerns about the parent company, especially one like AT&T, which owned HBO at the time.

Disagreements with AT&T executives extended to creative matters, with the duo disclosing that AT&T suggested shooting Game of Thrones vertically for mobile viewing. The pair ultimately sought a more stable environment, leading to their Netflix move, estimated to be a lucrative deal between $200 million and $300 million.

Addressing rumors, Benioff and Weiss confirm a proposition to conclude Game of Thrones with three feature films instead of the 13 episodes spanning two seasons that materialized.

HBO executives rejected the idea, emphasizing the series’ alignment with “Home Box Office” rather than an “Away Box Office” approach.

In addition to shedding light on their past, the creators discuss their Netflix venture, 3 Body Problem, anticipated as one of Netflix’s costliest productions.

Adapted from Liu Cixin’s sci-fi book series, the show, debuting in spring, explores a gradual alien invasion of Earth. Benioff expresses the daunting challenge of adapting the extensive source material.

As the creative duo ventures into new realms, fans await their unique narrative touch in 3 Body Problem, while Game of Thrones enthusiasts gain insights into the behind-the-scenes dynamics that shaped the iconic series.
