Angelina Jolie plays soprano Maria Callas in new biopic from Pablo

Maria, a biopic on the American-born Greek soprano Maria Callas, has been chosen by Pablo Larran as his next film, and Angelina Jolie has been cast in the lead role.

The true story-based movie will recount the turbulent, gorgeous, and terrible events that occurred during the world’s finest opera singer’s final days in 1970s Paris.

“Having the chance to combine my two most deep and personal passions, cinema and opera, has been a long-awaited dream,” said Larraín. “To do this with Angelina, a supremely brave and curious artist, is a fascinating opportunity. A true gift.”

“I take very seriously the responsibility to Maria’s life and legacy. I will give all I can to meet the challenge,” added Jolie. “Pablo Larraín is a director I have long admired. To be allowed the chance to tell more of Maria’s story with him, and with a script by Steven Knight, is a dream.”

Jolie most recently made appearances in the Warner Bros. thriller Those Who Wish Me Dead and Marvel’s Eternals. Without Blood, her sixth film as a filmmaker and the first produced under the terms of her recently announced three-year contract with Fremantle, is now in post-production.

The films Spencer, in which Kristen Stewart played Princess Diana, and Jackie, in which Natalie Portman played Jackie Kennedy, are among Larran’s most renowned works. In addition, he executive produced and directed the Stephen King novel-based Apple series Liseys’ Story. Ema, Neruda, The Club, and No are a few other important films that have been directed.
