‘American Dreamer’ Review: A Darkly Delightful Comedy Gem

American Dreamer deserves a standing ovation that it has been denied for far too long. Shot during the pandemic, this darkly comedic masterpiece directed by Paul Dektor and produced by Theodore Melfi (known for Hidden Figures and St. Vincent) was initially lost in the shuffle at Tribeca 2022. Thankfully, the creators decided to give it the attention it deserves, recutting and tightening the film before securing a release.

Having witnessed both the Tribeca cut and the final version, I can vouch for its brilliance. Now, after a prolonged wait, American Dreamer is ready to grace theaters and VOD platforms, courtesy of Vertical.

Deadline writes that Peter Dinklage and Shirley MacLaine lead an exceptional cast, delivering performances that are nothing short of brilliant. Dinklage, in particular, shines as Phil Loder, an economically challenged and emotionally messy professor.

His life takes an unexpected turn when an unbelievable opportunity arises – to own a mansion for a fraction of its value. The catch? He must coexist with the eccentric Astrid Finnelli (MacLaine), the mansion’s elderly owner, until her last breath.

Matt Dillon plays Phil’s slippery friend and real estate broker, Dell, who convinces him that Astrid is on the brink of death, making the deal a no-brainer. However, things take a hilarious and heartwarming turn when Phil realizes Astrid is far from frail, and her large, lively family adds chaos to his once seemingly perfect plan.

American Dreamer navigates the fine line between dark and smart humor, with Dinklage portraying Phil’s misadventures in a refreshingly unfiltered way. MacLaine, in her best role in years, brings authenticity to Astrid, embracing aging with grace and faults alike.

Danny Glover adds his touch as a crafty private eye, and Matt Dillon’s portrayal of a smooth real estate agent is amusing. Kim Quinn, also the producer and Melfi’s spouse, nails her role as Phil’s primary nemesis, adding to the film’s comedic brilliance.

The movie’s vintage Hal Ashby vibe, combined with its offbeat, dark, and wickedly funny moments, makes it a must-watch. American Dreamer is a delightful concoction of slapstick and delicate humor, inspired by an episode of NPR’s This American Life. Melfi and Chris Wehner’s storytelling prowess turns a true story premise into a comedic gem that’s worth every laugh and reflection.

In a cinematic landscape cluttered with routine plots, American Dreamer is a breath of fresh, comedic air. It’s time to celebrate this hidden treasure that promises an unforgettable ride through the absurdities of life, love, and unexpected dreams.
