The Courier (2020)

Cumberbatch plays a businessman recruited by British intelligence to act as a go-between with a high-ranking Russian official who fears that Khruschev may push his country to the brink of war in the early 1960s. The events depicted in the film are based on real-life occurrences. The strain of the operation on Cumberbatch and his wife, Jessie Buckley, is noticed, but the CIA is all for it. Brosnahan, a CIA officer, is sent in to ensure a smooth escape for both parties. Still, his efforts backfire when the Russian agent is captured, and Cumberbatch is abducted while waiting in his idle plane.

The final 20 minutes or so focus on Cumberbatch’s incarceration before the credits roll, and we learn our hero’s destiny. With all its solemn acting, great period production design, and sheer importance as a facet of history. The film itself lives on the fringes of better presentations like 13 Days (the Kevin Costner film which dealt with the Cuban missile crisis) and even the Oscar-winning Bridge of Spies directed by Steven Spielberg. Zeljko Ivanek, a veteran of seemingly every genre of film and television, plays Brosnahan’s superior.
