‘Kandahar’ receives US rights in eight figure deal

In a eight-figure deal, Open Road Films has bought the U.S. rights to the Gerard Butler action film Kandahar.

Butler and filmmaker Ric Roman Waugh collaborate once more on the G-BASE, Thunder Road, Capstone Studios, and MBC Studios film, which tells the tale of Tom Harris, a CIA agent working undercover who gets trapped in Afghanistan’s treacherous interior. After his covert operation is discovered, he and his Afghan interpreter must battle their way to an extraction site in Kandahar.

Mitchell LaFortune wrote the screenplay, which is based on his personal observations while serving as a military intelligence officer during the Snowden leaks. The movie was one of the first significant American movies to film in Saudi Arabia’s region. The movie is now preparing for a significant domestic theatrical release in 2023.

On behalf of the filmmakers, CAA and Capstone Global negotiated the contract. For Open Road Films, Matthew Sidari engaged in negotiations and completed the transaction.

“Kandahar is an exhilarating experience designed on a big screen. Our team is eager to present this heart-pounding actioner to fans worldwide since Gerry, Ric, the G-BASE team, and Thunder Road outdid themselves in it,” Tom Ortenberg of Open Road Films.

In the words of the film’s director, Ric Roman Waugh, “Mitch LaFortune’s visceral script’s authenticity and his ability to humanise not only our protagonists but all the characters shown in a place that’s been stuck in a permanent cycle of violence made it so intriguing and distinctive for him.”
