The movie Bruce Almighty was a box office triumph, and its screenwriters Steven Koren, Mark O’Keefe, and Steve Oedekerk had the opportunity to create a sequel,but the idea was not taken forward.
Koren and O’Keefe claimed in a SyFy Wire interview that they had a conversation with producer Michael Bostick about the idea for a Bruce Almighty sequel. They claimed that Jim Carrey would play the role of the guy attaining Satanic power in the upcoming franchise, Brucifier.
Koren said “[Carrey’s] manager and him wanted to do Brucifer. We went in and pitched it, but it never quite worked out, because it was later on … It would have been another giant movie and I don’t think they wanted to do it. It just didn’t work out for some reason, but a lot of people loved it, including Jim.”
Talking about Grace who played the role of Bruce’s wife in the movie, Koren said that she would have died by Koren saying that “You tend to lose your faith when the world seems unfair, and that’s what got him. It came from a serious place, but we were gonna write it in a very friendly way. We certainly didn’t want to depress people. So I think that scared [the studio] a little bit, but to Jim’s credit, he totally understood that we were going to make a big comedy and thought everybody would connect with it.”
The creators first presented the concept for Brucifier to the studios in 2010, but before that, in 2007, Evan Almighty, a film that went poorly at the box office, was made.
