1. Serendipity (2001)
Sara Thomas and Jonathan Trager met in New York while shopping for gloves. The timing was right, and despite the fact that they were shopping for their respective lovers, a night of Christmas shopping resulted in romance. Sara was unsure whether their love was meant to be. Jon wanted to learn more about things. After they split up, they decided to see if fate would bring them back together. Many years later, after they lost each other that night, they are engaged to marry. But neither can shake the urge to give fate one more chance to bring them back together. Jon asks his best man for help in his search for the girl he will never forget, starting at the store where they first met. Before the wedding, Sara asks her new-age musician fiancé for a break, and she and her best friend fly from California to New York in the hope that fate will bring her soulmate back. The two come close to meeting a number of times through near-misses and typical Shakespearean confusion, but fate will decide whether or not it was meant to be.
- Release Date: October 5, 2001
- IMDb Rating: 6.8/10
- Time Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
- Director: Peter Chelsom
- Main Cast: John Cusack, Kate Beckinsale, and Jeremy Piven
2. A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas (2011)
The fact that it has taken this long for a streamer to release a holiday rom-com that centers on an LGBTQ couple and is formulaic and cheesy is pretty egregious. Last year’s Happiest Season on Hulu was neither formulaic nor cheesy, nor, regrettably, particularly romantic or comedic. However, Michael Mayer’s cozy romance about two best friends who pretend to be married (which works every time!) comes to Netflix’s rescue. Only to discover that they might not have to be just friends in real life after all. Plus: Kathy Najimy and Jennifer Coolidge in their traditional roles as eccentric or pushy relatives!
- Release Date: December 2, 2021
- IMDb Rating: 6.1/10
- Time Duration: 1 hour 39 minutes
- Director: Michael Mayer
- Main Cast: Michael Urie, Philemon Chambers, and Luke MacFarlane
3. A Very Murray Christmas (2015)
Five years ago, Sofia Coppola made this moody, meta Netflix holiday special. In it, Bill Murray (who plays himself) struggles to shoot his own holiday special because it has been snowed out. He meets a parade of famous guests as he wanders through the Carlyle Hotel. As he realizes that his lonely Christmas isn’t over, they join him in holiday duets. What, you thought Murray and Coppola would just make jolly, cheesy Christmas farce? Do you recognize them?
- Release Date: December 4, 2015
- IMDb Rating: 5.5/10
- Time Duration: 56 minutes
- Director: Sofia Coppola
- Main Cast: Bill Murray, Paul Shaffer, and Michael Cera
4. Let it Snow (2019)
Compared to, say, the very sparkly musical Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square, this charming teen ensemble rom-com, which was a relatively understated entry in the streamer’s catalog last year, was added to Netflix’s Christmas collection. Teens in a small Midwestern town break out in love and spill their secrets after a snowstorm. Additionally, a fictional pop star appears and Joan Cusack portrays a well-known local eccentric! We only said relatively subdued.
- Release Date: November 8, 2019
- IMDb Rating: 5.8/10
- Time Duration: 1 hour 32 minutes
- Director: Luke Snellin
- Main Cast: Isabella Merced, Shameik Moore, and Odeya Rush
5. Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey (2020)
Even though it has lost some of its lusters since it was released last year, Netflix continues to dominate the calendar of Christmas movies. The musical fantasy written by David E. Talbert depicts the joyful world of a brilliant toymaker, his scheming apprentice, and the adorable robot and dancing doll that they create. The story weaves its way through a glittering holiday wonderland, but the title already tells you that it’s a Christmas Journey, so step up and take it!
- Release Date: November 13, 2020
- IMDb Rating: 6.4/10
- Time Duration: 2 hours 2 minutes
- Director: David E. Talbert
- Main Cast: Forest Whitaker, Keegan Michael Key, and Hugh Bonneville
6. Single All The Way (2021)
The fact that it has taken this long for a streamer to release a holiday rom-com that centers on an LGBTQ couple and is formulaic and cheesy is pretty egregious.
