FX’s What We Do in the Shadows has been a fan favorite for its witty, quirky, and darkly comedic take on the lives of Staten Island vampires. However, fans were met with bittersweet news at New York Comic Con 2024, where it was confirmed that Season 6 will indeed be the final chapter in the series. As the October 21, 2024 premiere of Season 6 draws near, both excitement and sadness fill the air as viewers prepare to bid farewell to their beloved vampire crew. The last season will also be available for streaming on Hulu on next day.
At the Comic-Con panel, showrunner Paul Simms, alongside writers Sarah Naftalis and Sam Johnson, and cast members Matt Berry (Laszlo), Kayvan Novak (Nandor), Harvey Guillén (Guillermo), and Mark Proksch (Colin Robinson), reflected on the decision to conclude the series. Simms explained the reasoning behind the show’s ending, stating that it’s always better to “go out on top” and leave fans wanting more rather than overstaying the show’s welcome. “It’s all in Season 6. Everything we ever wanted to do is in there,” Simms shared, reassuring fans that nothing was left on the table.
The decision to end the show is a strategic move to ensure the story remains fresh and impactful. Simms, known for his comedic timing and storytelling, emphasized that the writers and cast were able to pack in all the ideas they’d ever envisioned, making the final season as exciting and unpredictable as previous ones. As writer Sam Johnson teased, fans can expect plenty of “murder and mayhem” alongside office humor.
The panel also explored the character development that will be central in the upcoming season. Harvey Guillén revealed that his character, Guillermo, will continue to navigate his complex feelings about becoming a vampire. “He’s finding himself. He finds that he was meant to be a vampire, and now he is trying to make it in the real world like a big boy,” Guillén shared. Yet, it seems Guillermo’s journey won’t be without interference, as his fellow vampires won’t make it easy for him to stand on his own.
Mark Proksch and Matt Berry discussed the evolution of their characters’ dynamic, with Proksch’s Colin Robinson and Berry’s Laszlo becoming an unexpected comedic duo. “They’re an odd couple, and odd couples work well together,” Proksch said, referring to their growing, albeit begrudging, friendship. The humor in their relationship is sure to play a key role in the final season’s story arcs.
As the cast and crew took a moment to reflect on the end of their six-season journey, it was clear that leaving the show behind will be difficult for everyone involved. I’m gonna miss these guys. I’m gonna miss playing Nandor for you guys, Kayvan Novak said, sharing his emotional attachment to the role. Guillén echoed these sentiments, expressing his gratitude to the cast and writers and to the crew, who worked tirelessly, even during the pandemic, to make the show possible.
The final season promises to tie up loose ends while delivering the same beloved humor and charm that has made What We Do in the Shadows a modern classic. Fans may be saying goodbye to their favorite vampires, but the legacy of Staten Island’s most famous undead residents will live on.
