Vertigo

These are the admissions made by the master of all filmmakers, Alfred Hitchcock. Vertigo is the ultimate film indictment of what we now refer to as toxic masculinity, in addition to its unparalleled artistic merits. James Stewart was atypically cast as a former police officer who battled a fear of heights and a romantic compulsion. When it was first released, Vertigo was a critical and financial failure. The core of film school curricula is Hitchcock’s most intimate work and a complex statement on manhood and obsession. Thanks to Bernard Herrmann’s stirring, hypnotizing score and Robert Burks’ cinematography, which cleverly uses color to add layers of meaning to the narrative, it’s as intoxicating a piece of pure cinema as any from a purely technical perspective.
