Zach Cregger, the director of Barbarian, has admitted that he originally developed a screenplay for a movie with Gotham City as its setting.
In response to a question about his current projects from ComicBook.com, Cregger said
“I’m writing an original horror currently. There are conversations about existing I.P. franchise that I can’t talk about and then there’s a script I wrote before Barbarian that takes place, um, in Gotham City.” He continued, “And, uh, I actually love I think that’s my favorite thing I’ve written believe it or not, so I don’t know what’s gonna happen with that. Nobody from Warner Bros. or DC. I have not talked to anybody about it. I hope to one day.”

Cregger had previously mentioned his “Batman-adjacent” screenplay in September 2022, explaining how he is normally “not a superhero guy,” but that he “just couldn’t stop thinking about this one story that kind of takes place in a Batman-adjacent thing” so he wrote it and is now “utterly obsessed with it.” He also teased his next project, an untitled horror film, which he described as weirder and “way more ambitious than Barbarian.”
Barbarian stars Georgina Campbell (Black Mirror), Bill Skarsgård (It: Chapter One) and Justin Long (Jeepers Creepers). Set in Detroit, the horror thriller film follows Campbell’s Tess Marshall, a documentarian who discovers that she’s been double-booked at her Airbnb with a mysterious man. She quickly realizes that she’s found herself in a dangerous position as she discovers a dark secret hidden within the house. Barbarian has earned generally favorable reviews from critics and audiences. The film has also been considered a sleeper hit at the box office, grossing over $42 million worldwide against a $4.5 million budget.
From 20th Century Studios and New Regency, Barbarian is now available to own on Digital.
