Will ‘Barbenheimer’ Success Be Overshadowed by Labor Strikes

As the movie industry emerges from the devastating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, unexpected labor strikes are now threatening to disrupt the recovery and jeopardize the release calendar for the latter half of 2023.

While cinemas were rejoicing in the success of “Barbenheimer,” a remarkable and viral sensation, the sudden work stoppage has revived memories of pandemic-era hardships, raising concerns for movie theater operators. “We are enjoying this party and don’t know what comes next,” says Joe Masher, chief operating officer of Bow Tie Cinemas, referring to the sustained hype of “Barbenheimer.”

Studios like Sony and Warned Bros. has already taken significant actions pushing back the release of their various projects. This labor unrest has rendered studios unable to promote their big-ticket films with star-studded press tours, depriving audiences of the usual glitzy red carpet premieres and late-night talk show appearances.

Movie Premiere

As movie theaters face the challenge of filling their screens with compelling content, they find themselves in a precarious financial position. Many theater chains are burdened with debt, and independent operators have struggled to match pre-pandemic ticket sales.

Chris Randleman, Chief Revenue Officer of Flix Brewhouse chain, emphasizes the gravity of the situation, “The studios would be making a grave mistake moving major parts of their slate out of 2023, and it would be a severe blow to theaters right as we are getting back on our feet,” he says. “The industry can’t take another round of massive date shifts. It will hurt everyone.”

While the absence of star promotions and late-night shows may impact box office performance, cinema operators are trying to make the best of the situation by showcasing trailers for upcoming films during screenings. Despite the challenges, industry leaders remain optimistic about the recovery, likening the situation to sparse release calendars seen before, and emphasizing that it pales in comparison to the hardships faced during the pandemic.

Nevertheless, there is a sense of urgency among industry players to resolve the labor strikes promptly. For theater operators, the stakes are high as they seek to regain their footing and continue the path to recovery.

Release Delays Confirmed By Studios

The recent labor strikes in Hollywood have caused major film studios to reconsider their release schedules, leading to potential delays for some highly anticipated movies.

According to Variety, Sony has already made significant changes, pushing back “Gran Turismo” and “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” and removing “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” from the calendar.

Other studios are also contemplating adjustments, including Warner Bros., which may delay “Dune: Part Two” and holiday releases like “The Marvels” and “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.”

The absence of star-studded press tours and late-night talk show appearances has raised concerns about the promotional impact on box office performance. However, cinema operators are optimistic about utilizing trailers to spread the word about upcoming films.
