In a surprising twist, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) has unveiled a comprehensive plan to stage a widespread protest targeting Apple, coinciding with the highly anticipated Worldwide Developers Conference.
The guild, representing talented writers across various platforms, has shared a detailed list of locations where its members will distribute leaflets, aiming to amplify their concerns.
The primary objective of the WGA is to exert pressure on Apple, the company behind the Apple TV+ streaming service, to resolve the ongoing dispute. With a focus on Apple TV+’s underwhelming streaming library, the leaflets emphasize its offering of less than 200 hours of WGA-covered scripted comedy and drama content.
The union is urging its members to convey the message that Apple TV+ heavily relies on writers and implore the tech giant to reenter negotiations and end the strike.
The WGA has emphasized the impact of the strike on prominent series like Maya Rudolph’s Loot, Severance, and Sinking Spring, underscoring the urgent need for a resolution. To further illustrate their point, the guild has highlighted that Apple’s proposed costs for their terms amount to a mere $17 million per year, a small fraction of the company’s staggering $400 billion revenue reported last year.
Clearly, the WGA is resolute in its determination to reopen dialogue with Apple and secure a fair agreement for its members. These events unfold at a critical juncture for Apple, as it prepares to unveil its highly anticipated mixed-reality headset.
The WGA’s protest will span across major cities, including Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Washington, D.C. Demonstrations will take place at pivotal locations such as Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California, as well as notable spots like the Tower Theatre in Los Angeles and the flagship store on Fifth Avenue in New York.
