As Hocus Pocus 2 debuted on Disney+, some fans are already wishing for the Black Flame Candle to be lighted once more as the Sander sisters finally returned to Salem after more than 29 years!
Prior to the release of Hocus Pocus 2, Midler, Parker, and Najimy talked openly about the prospect of another sequel film in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. They all agreed on one thing when asked about the possibility of continuing the story past filmmaker Anne Fletcher’s sequel: they would be more than pleased to come back as Winifred, Sarah, and Mary.
Even though Najimy vowed to “never say never” to the potential of working on further Hocus Pocus projects, she added that it appears they’ve “pulled every tale you could take out of this” series given how Fletcher’s sequel ended. Midler felt the same way.
“I’m envious of other actors who have franchises, and I was hoping for a sequel to First Wives Club, but we never got that. After 30 years with no sequel to Hocus Pocus, I’ve always been envious of people who get to do their favorite character more than once. The fact that we got to do this finally, after 30 years of promoting the idea, I’m glad we got to do it. I’d love to have a franchise especially a character I love playing,” Midler told the outlet. “If there was a third one, of course I’d sign on, but I don’t know how. I can’t imagine what the story would be, but I love Winifred, Sarah, Mary, and our relationship. It’s good for women. We stick together through hell and high water, but we do cause mayhem, and not many women cause that much mayhem!”
“Kathy had a good idea that the third one should be animated. That would be cool and a smart idea. It’s fun, funny, and could be interesting and innovative, like old-fashioned or new [animation],” Parker shared.
Streaming of Hocus Pocus and Hocus Pocus 2 are available on Disney+. Although it appears unlikely that Hocus Pocus 3 would ever be in the works, the Sanderson sisters’ narrative isn’t coming to an end. A Hocus Pocus Broadway musical is in the works, albeit it appears to be in its very early phases of production, according to Hocus Pocus film producer David Kirschner.
