In a thrilling casting reveal, Lionsgate announced that Nia Long will be gracing the screen as Katherine Jackson in the much-anticipated Michael Jackson biopic, aptly titled “Michael.” Joining a star-studded cast, including Jaafar Jackson in the titular role, Long is set to portray the matriarch of the iconic Jackson musical family.
THR reports that Director Antoine Fuqua expressed his enthusiasm for having Nia Long on board, praising her as an actor with a remarkable ability to bring depth and authenticity to her characters. Fuqua stated, “I’m excited to work alongside her as she pours all of that into Katherine Jackson: a woman who was the glue, the rock, and the heart of the Jackson family during its best and its most turbulent times.”
Nia Long, renowned for her roles in the Best Man franchise, Friday, and Boyz N the Hood, reciprocated the sentiment, describing Katherine Jackson as “an incredible pillar of strength and grace for the entire Jackson family.”
Scheduled for release on April 18, 2025, “Michael” is a collaborative effort with the Jackson estate, ensuring an authentic portrayal of the legendary pop star’s life.
While the filmmakers have promised a comprehensive exploration of Michael Jackson’s life, there remains uncertainty regarding how the biopic will handle the sensitive topic of sexual abuse accusations leveled against the late artist.
The Jackson estate had previously defended Michael Jackson against such allegations, prominently featured in the 2019 HBO documentary Leaving Neverland.
Produced by Graham King, known for his work on Bohemian Rhapsody, and with a script penned by John Logan, the acclaimed writer of Gladiator, “Michael” is poised to be a cinematic journey that delves into the highs and lows of Michael Jackson’s extraordinary life.
The co-executors of the Michael Jackson estate, John Branca and John McClain, are also on board to contribute to the film’s production. As the excitement builds around this upcoming biopic, fans eagerly await a glimpse into the multifaceted life of the King of Pop.
