Netflix’s Korean Romance Revolution Takes Center Stage

Netflix reported a significant surge in global viewership of K-Romance titles, with a tripled viewership between 2018 and 2022. Impressively, over 90% of these views originated from outside South Korea in 2022 alone.

Don Kang, VP of content (Korea), emphasized the universal appeal of these stories, stating, “Our stories touch on the universal aspects of life — love, heartbreak, and tenderness, while also providing a peek into the unique facets of Korean culture.”

The success of Netflix K-Romance titles owes much to the role of dubbing, allowing audiences worldwide to fully immerse themselves in the dialogues spoken in their own languages.

Yang Wooyeon, director of content (Korea), highlighted the significance of this aspect, affirming that

“listening to dialogues in their own languages helps K-Romance resonate more deeply with viewers worldwide.”

In a highly anticipated announcement, Netflix has revealed its lineup of six new Korean romance titles set to captivate viewers in the coming months.

The exciting news was unveiled during the star-studded event “K-romance obsession” held in Seoul, attended by influential K-drama personalities from across the Asia Pacific region.

The event itself was a sight to behold, adorned with a vibrant display of red and pink hues, complemented by a plethora of heart-shaped decorations. Guests were treated to delectable snacks featured in popular Netflix K-dramas like “Crash Landing on You,” “Extraordinary Attorney Woo,” “Business Proposal,” and “Alchemy of Souls,” adding to the immersive experience.
