Michael Cera Shares Thoughts on Rihanna’s Slap in ‘It Was Great’

In a candid interview, actor Michael Cera fondly recalls the moment Rihanna delivered a memorable slap across his face during a film shoot. The incident took place during the production of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s 2013 comedy This Is The End, where Cera played a fictionalized version of himself.

The scene involved Cera playfully smacking Rihanna’s butt, which prompted her to retaliate with an unexpected and hearty slap to his face. Reflecting on the experience, Cera shared with GQ that he had actually requested the genuine hit, believing it would enhance the comedic effect of the scene. He remarked:

“A fake slap just doesn’t look good, so she hit me hard. Yeah, she really sent me flying, and it was great. And now it’s on film forever, this pain that I experienced.”

Rogen previously detailed the sequence’s origin during a 2013 podcast interview. Cera had asked Rihanna if he could slap her rear for real, to which she agreed on the condition that she could deliver a genuine slap to his face in return.

Despite the humorous intent, Rihanna’s slap ended up being stronger than anticipated, temporarily affecting Cera’s equilibrium.

This amusing incident showcases the dedication that both Cera and Rihanna brought to their comedic roles, resulting in an authentic and memorable on-screen moment.

While Cera has continued to make audiences laugh with his roles, he has also ventured into new projects, such as his potential involvement in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.

Rihanna’s and Cera’s on-screen chemistry in This Is The End remains an example of their commitment to delivering comedy through unscripted and unexpected interactions, leaving a lasting impression on both the film and the actors themselves.
