Melissa Barrera Reflects on Exit from ‘Scream 7’ and Potential Franchise Return Amid Controversy

After her departure from “Scream 7” a few months back, Melissa Barrera’s exit sparked a series of changes in the film, with co-star Jenna Ortega also leaving and director Christopher Landon stepping down. As the horror franchise shifts gears, so does Barrera.

However, during the promotion of her new horror film “Abigail,” she discussed the possibility of returning to the iconic franchise.

Although it seems improbable that Barrera will reprise her role as Sam, given the turbulence faced by both her and the franchise, she refuses to rule it out entirely.

In an interview with THR, while discussing the events and her future with “Scream,” she stated, “I’ve learned to never say never, but also a lot of things would have to happen for Sam to come back. For now, next page, next chapter, and then we’ll see what the future holds.”

Barrera’s dismissal stemmed from social media posts related to the conflict between Hamas and Israel. Spyglass issued a statement emphasizing their “zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form.”

Barrera responded, asserting her stance against “hate and prejudice of any kind.” Despite maintaining her innocence regarding the controversy, the aftermath led to her departure.

Throughout this ordeal, Barrera has underscored her close bonds with her fellow cast members from the franchise, particularly highlighting her relationship with on-screen sister Jenna Ortega. She also expressed her continued connection with her “Scream” family, including Jasmin Savoy Brown, Liana Liberato, and Jack Quaid.

While it appears unlikely that Barrera will return to the “Scream” series, she remains open to the possibility. With “Scream 7” forging ahead under new leadership and Neve Campbell reprising her role as Sidney Prescott, Barrera’s future with the franchise remains uncertain.

Meanwhile, she is set to star in the upcoming horror film “Abigail,” directed by Radio Silence, hitting theaters on April 19. As Barrera aptly puts it, “never say never,” hinting at the unpredictable nature of the entertainment industry.
