Aneka, the Wakandan warrior played by Michaela Coel, also received a character picture, hinting at the significance of her role in the future MCU sequel. Coel was the ideal choice for the role of Aneka, according to Wakanda Forever director Ryan Coogler, because they were both “sort of rebels” in their own fields. The British-Ghanaian actor additionally expressed how much she appreciated Aneka’s outright queerness, saying, “The fact that my character is queer convinced me to accept the part. I wanted to show Ghana that because I found it appealing.” Coel believed it was crucial for her to play Aneka because of Ghana’s long history of anti-LGBTQ+ policies, saying, “I know just by my being Ghanaian, Ghanaians will come.”
