Maya Hawke recently revealed that filming the final season of Stranger Things has been an emotional journey for her and the rest of the cast.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the actress described the experience as “heartbreaking,” noting the sentimental atmosphere as the Netflix series approaches its conclusion.
Hawke, who joined Stranger Things in its third season as Robin Buckley, has been part of the show for five years. Despite being a later addition to the cast, she feels a deep connection to the team. “It’s already starting to be heartbreaking, you know? I mean, it’s the end of a really long journey. Longer for some of my castmates, even, than for me. So it’s really sentimental,” she said.
She also expressed her role in supporting her colleagues: “As a late addition cast member, I feel like it’s my job to be here to facilitate their feelings and just be grateful and excited to have been a part of it at all.”
The atmosphere on set is charged with mixed emotions as the team wraps up the fifth and final season. Hawke strives to keep the mood upbeat despite the often intense and draining storylines. She shared, “We shoot for a long time, so it’s kind of reinvigorating [to bring] the joy and finding it every day and making it new. It’s a really fun thing to do.”
Outside of Stranger Things, Hawke, daughter of Hollywood stars Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, has been candid about her privilege in the industry. In a recent interview with the Saturday Times, she acknowledged the advantages her famous parents have afforded her. “There are so many people who deserve to have this kind of life who don’t, but I think I’m comfortable with not deserving it and doing it anyway,” she said. Hawke also reflected on the alternative paths she could have taken, stating, “I saw two paths when I was first starting, and one of them was: change your name, get a nose job and go to open casting roles.”
As Stranger Things nears its end, fans and cast members alike are preparing for an emotional farewell. The show’s impact on popular culture and the personal lives of those involved is undeniable. With the final season, viewers can expect a poignant and memorable conclusion to the beloved series.
