HBO Max reveals that the series Winning Time The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty has been cancelled after two seasons. The announcement came as a surprise, given it came only moments after the network broadcast the Season 2 finale on Sunday night.
The series, which premiered in March 2022, is about the Los Angeles Lakers and their emergence in the early 1980s. The first season focused on Jerry Buss’ first year as club owner and Magic Johnson’s rookie season in 1979-80. The next four years are shown in the second season.
Given how the finale plays out, director Salli Richardson expressed expectations for a third season in an interview with THR in late August. “Obviously, you see how the season ends. So we would love to have, at the very least, even though we can do this for years, one more season so that we can get the Lakers winning against the Celtics. We don’t want to end with the Celtics winning. That’s awful.” she said.
After the announcement, she posted on Instagram saying, “When you give it everything you’ve got, you can have no regrets.”
Borenstein and Jim Hecht devised the series, which was based on Jeff Pearlman’s book Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s.
Winning Time Season 1 and 2 are streaming on HBO Max.
