It wasn’t the kind of trash superhero movie or sci-fi blockbuster that has dominated the box office recently; instead, it was an old-fashioned yet creative murder mystery. Yet that is precisely what it did, stealing $313 million (£255 million).
The writer and director Rian Johnson says, “It makes sense to me because it’s the same thing that’s always been appealing about the genre. “What’s not to love? You have a rogue’s gallery of interesting characters, you have a charismatic central detective, you have intrigue, you have mystery, comedy, human drama, all the ingredients are there.”
