Elle Fanning is in talks to lead the new standalone Badlands film from 20th Century Studios and director Dan Trachtenberg. This project aims to expand the Predator universe. Trachtenberg, known for his work on Prey, co-wrote the script with Patrick Aison.
While 20th Century hasn’t confirmed these details, insiders reveal that Fanning’s involvement came after a successful meeting with Trachtenberg. Fanning’s interest in the franchise pushed the studio to bring her on board, marking a significant step forward for the film.
The plot remains a mystery, but it will feature the iconic extraterrestrial hunter. The release format is also undecided. Prey streamed on Hulu, breaking viewership records, but with 20th Century’s recent theatrical releases like Boogeyman and the upcoming Alien: Romulus, a theater debut for Badlands seems likely.
Prey premiered in summer 2022 to critical acclaim and record-breaking streaming numbers on Hulu, even earning an Emmy nomination for Best Movie. Building on that success, 20th Century aims to not only create another film but expand the universe, with Trachtenberg at the helm.
Unlike Prey, which featured lesser-known actors like Amber Midthunder, Badlands seeks to star a well-established talent. Fanning’s enthusiasm for the franchise and her meeting with Trachtenberg secured her role in the film. Once her deal finalizes, production is expected to accelerate, potentially starting later this year.
In addition to Badlands, a sequel to Prey is in early development. While details are scarce and no talent is confirmed, there’s speculation that Midthunder might return. This would be a first for the Predator series, as no previous film’s star has reprised their role.
Fanning, who first battled aliens in J.J. Abrams’ Super 8, recently wrapped up her role as Catherine the Great in The Great, earning an Emmy nomination. Her upcoming projects include A Complete Unknown, where she stars opposite Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan. She is represented by UTA, TFC Management, and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.
