James Cameron’s sci-fi blockbuster “Avatar” lifetime global box office receipts are approaching $3 billion as a result of its rerelease.
It is still the highest grossing movie of all time as of this writing, having earned a staggering $2.92 billion at international box offices. In order to provide viewers the chance to rematch the classic movie with enhanced sound and images while they wait for the release of the sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, later this year, Avatar was re-released in September. Even though a large portion of its revenue came from its initial release in 2009, the movie nevertheless managed to have a sizable impact at the box office this time around.

It has earned more than $18 million domestically and $39 million internationally since its re-release. Avatar is now the fourth-highest grossing movie of all time in the United States with a running domestic total of $785 million. With $936 million domestically, Star Wars: The Force Awakens topped the charts in 2015.

Since its record breaking initial run, movie has been rereleased a total of four times. A special extended edition that was released in theatres in 2011 brought in roughly $45 million in total globally. The third re-release occurred in China in 2021, followed by another re-release that was exclusive to APAC regions in 2020. Avengers: Endgame briefly overtook Avatar and made it to the top spot on the global box office, but the China-specific re-release in 2021 helped Avatar reclaim its spot.
Avatar: The Way of Water is scheduled to hit theaters on Dec 16, 2022.
