Lifetime’s latest true crime film, Amish Stud: The Eli Weaver Story, brings to light a shocking real-life narrative of betrayal and murder within an Amish community. The movie stars Luke Macfarlane as Eli Weaver, offering a gripping portrayal of the true story.
The movie is based on a tragic event that took place over a decade ago. On June 2, 2009, Barbara Weaver, a devoted member of the Amish faith and a mother of five, met a gruesome fate. The central character, Eli Weaver, was introduced to Barbara during their Rumspringa, a period of exploration for young Amish individuals.
Decider points out that Eli’s charming façade during Rumspringa masked a darker reality. He continued to pursue relationships with women outside the Amish community even after marrying Barbara and having five children.
Using the moniker “AMISH STUD” on dating profiles, Eli engaged in extramarital affairs. Disturbingly, some of these women revealed that Eli often spoke of wanting to eliminate his wife.
The intricate web of deception came to a head when Eli conspired with Barb Raber, a married mother of three and a Mennonite, to murder Barbara. Raber worked as a driver in a neighboring Amish community.
The Murder of Barbara Weaver
In the weeks leading up to the murder, Eli and Raber exchanged text messages outlining their sinister plot. Raber’s computer history revealed searches for methods of murder, including poisoning and arson. Despite an initial failed attempt to kill Barbara, they persisted in their deadly mission.
Eli established an alibi by embarking on a fishing trip while Raber entered the Weaver household and shot Barbara with a shotgun. Barbara’s children alerted a neighbor, who contacted the authorities.
Suspicion quickly fell on Eli, despite his alibi. A voicemail left by Raber’s friend added to the mounting evidence. Eli’s online dating activities, which contradicted Amish beliefs, further incriminated him.
Text messages between Eli and Raber detailing their murder plot became a crucial piece of evidence.
Eli Weaver ultimately testified against Raber, resulting in his conviction for complicity in murder and a sentence of 15 years to life. He becomes eligible for parole in 2024. Barb Raber was convicted of aggravated murder and faces potential parole in 2032.
Amish Stud: The Eli Weaver Story sheds light on a harrowing chapter in the Amish community, underscoring the devastating consequences of deceit and betrayal.
