MGM+’s The Winter King Season 1 has released two episodes of the newly released show so far, but critics and fans have mixed feelings toward the series.
The show takes inspiration from the initial book within Bernard Cornwell’s The Warlord Chronicles, a three-part book series that blends elements of the King Arthur legend with dashes of historical reality.
Julie Roman of Movie Web remarked, “The Winter King is a bold and bloody retelling of the Arthurian legends. You’re hooked from the start as the protagonist’s journey begins on a truly harsh note.”
Meanwhile, Erik Kain of Forbes writes, “Cornwell is a master wordsmith, and all they had to do was use his material. Instead, we get this. The arrogance of it! The sheer arrogance!”
The same pattern of favorable and unfavorable reviews can be seen among the audience, with one sharing, “So far so so Good…. We need more shows like this dig in Vikings Fans….Beautiful Landscapes, Great choices with the casting…A show were not everyone is Hollywood Beautiful but gives you Beautiful Performances and Keeps you Wanting More Episodes.”
However, another viewer expressed their disappointment, “Ah yes, another race-swapping, culture-stealing, poorly acted, pseudo-medieval production to insult our intelligence. Arthur Pendragon and Merlin, the quintessential Anglo-Saxon tale, but not any more folks. This has become exhausting. There’s nothing left to watch.”FLAG THIS REVIEW”
