Heather McMahan, a popular comedian and host of the Absolutely Not podcast on the Dear Media network, is making her debut on Netflix with her first stand-up special titled Son I Never Had.
The hour-long show is based on material from her humorously titled The Farewell Tour, which consisted of 94 dates across North America in 2021 and 2022.
In her special, McMahan draws from her own personal experiences, including the challenges of losing her father shortly after his pancreatic cancer diagnosis and lighter topics like a regrettable childhood bowl cut.
Through these stories, she finds humor in universally relatable themes such as grief and body image. While introducing her life story to new audiences, McMahan’s special also includes hidden references that longtime fans and listeners will appreciate.
In one joke, she paints a vivid picture of her younger self, wearing her father’s hand-me-down golf shirt tucked into the front and sensible Velcro sandals for adventures at Costco. She even shares an amusing anecdote about her stylist giving her an ill-advised buzz cut.
In addition to her stand-up career, Heather McMahan also developed a pilot based on her life for Peacock, although the streamer eventually passed on it. She is now in a separate development deal with NBC.
