Cate Blanchett Joins Guy Maddin’s ‘Rumors’ Cast

Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett has joined the cast of director Guy Maddin’s latest arthouse movie, Rumors.

Maddin, along with his frequent collaborators Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson, has written and will be directing this indie film. Their previous work together was The Green Fog (available on Prime), an experimental feature that delved into San Francisco-produced films and TV shows, following the structure of Vertigo.

In Rumors, Blanchett will portray a composer-conductor whose personal life revelations shatter her reputation. This role is seen as the latest collaboration between an esteemed actor and auteur, as the Canadian indie film industry aims to gain recognition and success globally.

To ensure Blanchett’s participation without violating the ongoing Hollywood actor strike restrictions, an interim agreement was reached between Rumors and SAG-AFTRA, the actors’ union.

Maddin is known for his skill in surreal storytelling, with films like The Heart of the World, Keyhole, and The Saddest Music in the World, receiving acclaim in festival circuits and arthouse cinemas. His 2007 film, My Winnipeg, was a mixture of praise and satire, serving as an ode to his hometown.

Guy Maddin’s Rumors, a co-production between Canada and Germany, is backed by Buffalo Gal Pictures, Walking Down Broadway Ltd, and Thin Stuff Productions. Elevation Pictures will release the film in Canada and has received financial support from Telefilm Canada and Manitoba Film & Music.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rumors will start shooting on October 9.
