Bradley Cooper’s Transformation in ‘Maestro’ Sparks Controversy

Controversy has surrounded Bradley Cooper’s portrayal of legendary composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein in his upcoming Netflix film “Maestro.”

The initial unveiling of Cooper’s prosthetic nose for the role sparked discussions online, with concerns raised over the use of such prosthetics. However, Bernstein’s children, Jamie, Alexander, and Nina Bernstein, have now come forward to defend Cooper’s choice.

In a heartfelt statement posted on their father’s X page, the Bernsteins expressed their involvement in Cooper’s creative journey and praised his commitment to portraying their father. They explained that Cooper’s decision to use makeup to enhance his resemblance to Leonard Bernstein was met with their approval.

The Bernsteins emphasized that their father would likely have been supportive of the use of prosthetics and dismissed any criticism as potentially disingenuous attempts to undermine Cooper’s efforts.

Throughout the film’s production, the Bernsteins felt a profound sense of respect and love from Cooper, particularly in his portrayal of Leonard Bernstein and his wife, Felicia. They expressed gratitude for the experience and eagerly anticipate sharing Cooper’s creation with the world.

Accoring to Deadline, the controversy around Cooper’s use of prosthetics stems from concerns of “Jewface,” a cultural phenomenon involving non-Jewish actors playing Jewish characters.

Comedian Sarah Silverman has been vocal about the importance of accurate representation and has criticized instances of non-Jewish actors portraying Jewish characters. This issue has also arisen in the portrayals of Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir and comedian Joan Rivers by other actors.

“Maestro,” Cooper’s second directorial endeavor following his Oscar-winning “A Star Is Born,” is a highly anticipated film set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival. Despite the controversy, the film continues to generate buzz as an awards contender.
